This study focuses on the way financial technology (Fintech) solutions impacted the results of the overall E-bank audit, especially in the period before and during the COVID-19 outbreak. We employed content analysis and a Logit regression model using data from a sample of 14 listed Egyptian banks from 2017 to 2020 to empirically investigate this link. The results confirm that (i) a significant portion of fintech solutions was activated during and after the COVID-19 outbreak, and (ii) auditors’ impressions of digitalized banking services are considerably and favorably influenced by both fintech development and digital banking transactions. Our findings have practical implications for policymakers, regulators, financial institutions, and auditors; where, fintech solutions have proven to be essential in helping financial institutions run effectively and deliver their financial services, during the critical time of the COVID-19 outbreak. Fintech solutions are anticipated to contribute more to the long-term economic recovery against this crisis, where the country’s strategy for financial inclusion benefits from the development of Fintech solutions.

The objective of this article is to shed light on the emergence of recent auditing technology i.e. integrating data analytics into auditing procedures. The reliance on digitalization as well as the increasing volume of data accessibility has reckoned the importance of using Big data and Data Analytics (BDA) in audit work. Therefore, an attempt is made in this article to analyze the possible upshots of big data on audit procedures. The article contributes to auditing literature by discussing in-depth the usage of audit data analytics and the challenges that are likely to be confronted both by the auditors and the client process.

Doi No.:https://DOI:10.47509/IJAAS.2023.v05i01.03

Purpose – This study reviews the literature on adopting big data analytics (BDA) in external auditing. This goal is divided into several sub-goals. First, we aim to find the most productive and cited authors, documents, and sources concerning this research discipline. Second, we aim to organize and summarize prior literature to reveal the areas that have been studied and the gaps that require further investigation.

Design/methodology/approach – This study uses a systematic approach in reviewing literature. We utilized bibliometric and content analyses to provide a comprehensive and updated image of the current state of the literature and potential areas that need further research. Ninety-eight articles published between 2011 and 2021 extracted from 38 journals indexed in the Scopus database were included in our review.

Findings – The United States is the most productive country of research related to BDA in auditing, with 34 articles. The research trend flourished in 2015 to reach its peak in 2021 with 27 pieces. It is worth noting that the University of New Jersey (Rutgers University) is the most productive affiliation with 18 contributions. The most productive and cited journal was Accounting Horizons, with 16 articles. In addition, the most cited paper is “Big data in accounting: An overview” by Vasarhelyi, Kogan, and Tuttle (2015). Our analysis grouped the literature into three main research themes:1) BDA in auditing process; 2) BDA diffusion; and 3) BDA in auditing curricula. In addition, seven future research areas are developed: 1) research scope and methodology, 2) BDA and components of the audit process, 3) BDA and interactions with stakeholders, 4) new theories, 5) reasons for adopting BDA, 6) impact of BDA on audit firms, 7) BDA and auditing education.

Implications – This analysis provides valuable insights for audit academics, practitioners, and educators on using BDA in external auditing. The results of this study will inform academic researchers of potential future research opportunities. Moreover, this study presents the academic community’s insights that benefit audit practitioners and educators.

Originality/value – This study contributes to the literature by combining bibliometric and content analyses to provide a comprehensive and updated picture of the current state of BDA and the external auditing literature.

Blockchain is transforming not only the way of recording, processing, and storing financial transactions and information, but also the way audit firms can practise their profession. The purpose of this article is to examine how this technology will affect the audit process quality. An empirical study was conducted on a sample of Egyptian banks that use Blockchain Technology in the period from (2017) to (2021). The Conceptual Framework and Literature Review concluded that this technology could affect audit firms at six key levels. Blockchain will allow an auditor to: (1) Save time and improve the efficiency of their audit, (2) Favour an audit covering the whole population instead of an audit based on sampling techniques, (3) Focus the audit on testing controls rather than testing transactions, (4) Set up a continuous audit process, (5) Play a more strategic audit role, and (6) Develop new advisory services. Furthermore, the empirical study concluded that there is a significant relationship between Blockchain and Audit quality in the banking sector. The results underline the need for the establishment of a clear and coherent legislative system and new audit standards, allowing auditors to embed this technology and enhance audit practices.
